The skills your child will actually use at 30
What the real world rewards has almost nothing in common with what gets measured between Grade 5 and Grade 12. Here is the actual list, and why none of it appears on a report card.
Ask a thirty-year-old what they use every day at work. Not what they studied — what they actually use. The answers are remarkably consistent, and they are almost never subjects.
They say things like: knowing which problem to work on. Getting a busy person to say yes. Telling when someone is agreeing with you but has no intention of doing anything. Deciding without enough information and being able to live with it. Making a case to a room that started out sceptical.
None of that is on a syllabus. All of it is trainable. That gap — between what is measured for twelve years and what is used for forty — is the single most expensive inefficiency in a young person’s education.
The four that come up every time
Across enough conversations with people who run things, the same four capabilities surface regardless of industry.
- Problem selection. Not solving problems — choosing which one deserves the effort. Most wasted work in any organisation is excellent execution against the wrong target.
- Reading a room. Knowing who actually decides, who merely speaks, and what the unsaid objection is. This is not charisma. It is attention, and it can be practised.
- Deciding on partial information. The facts are never complete and the deadline does not move. The skill is not certainty; it is making a defensible call and adjusting fast when it turns out to be wrong.
- Making the case. Turning a correct answer into a decision someone else acts on. A good idea that nobody adopts has the same practical value as no idea at all.

Why school cannot teach these
This is not a criticism of teachers, and it is not fixed by a better syllabus. It is structural.
A school exists to transmit a defined body of knowledge to a large group of children, reliably, and to assess it fairly. Every design decision follows from that: standard questions, standard answers, one correct response per question, individual assessment.
Now look at the four capabilities above. Every one of them requires an ambiguous situation, a real counterparty, and a consequence that lands on the student. Problem selection is meaningless when the problem is handed to you. Reading a room is impossible when everyone in the room has the same objective. Deciding under uncertainty cannot be assessed when there is a marking scheme.
The classroom is not failing at these. It was never built for them.
What actually builds them
Three conditions, all of which are hard to manufacture inside a school and easy to find inside a working business.
The first is a real counterparty — a person with their own interests who does not have to agree with you. The second is genuine ambiguity, where more than one answer is defensible and nobody at the table knows which is right. The third is consequence: something changes as a result of the decision, and the student can see it.
A student who spends an afternoon in a retail operation and is asked why the queue is longest at the payment step, not the counter, is doing something no worksheet can replicate. They are looking at an unstructured situation and being asked to impose structure on it. That is the whole skill.
The part parents underestimate
These capabilities compound, and they compound over years rather than terms. A child who starts noticing how businesses work at eleven has a seven-year head start on one who begins at eighteen — not because they know more, but because their instincts have been running longer.
It also works the other way. The reason so many capable graduates struggle in their first two years of work is not that they lack intelligence. It is that they are building judgement from zero, in public, while being paid to already have it.

You cannot shortcut that period. But you can start it earlier, in a setting where the stakes are real enough to teach and small enough to survive.
What to do about it
Nothing here argues against academics. Marks still open doors, and a child who neglects them narrows their options. The argument is that marks are necessary and visibly insufficient, and that the second half of the equation gets almost no deliberate attention.
If you want to start without a program, start with observation. Take your child into a business you know — a friend’s shop, a clinic, a workshop — and ask them one question: where does this business lose money it does not need to lose? Then make them defend the answer.
They will be wrong the first several times. That is the exercise. The skill is not the answer; it is the willingness to look at something complicated and commit to a view about it.
